Europe’s Cellular Networks Emerge as Viable Alternatives to Broadband and LEO Satellites with Peak Download Speeds of 1.1 Gbps, according to CELLSMART

Cannes, France, 30 May 2023 - CELLSMART, the cellular intelligence division of SmartCIC, has launched the results of its latest cellular performance testing, which show that European cellular networks have emerged as a viable alternative to broadband and Low Orbit Satellites (LEO) when connecting the last mile. Test results show Norway leading Europe with maximum 5G download speeds indoors of 1.12 Gbps. Spain had the top results for maximum 5G download speeds outdoors with 1.11 Gbps.

CELLSMART notes that cellular networks across Europe are delivering speeds that equal or exceed what is available on broadband or LEO satellites. Tests run by CELLSMART show that 5G upload and download speeds in both metro and remote areas are offering the flexibility of cellular combined with enterprise-grade network performance. This is ideal for supporting fixed wireless access (FWA) use cases across Europe.

Oslo, Norway is the leading city for 5G download speeds in Europe with 1.12 Gbps. Cerdanyola del Vallès and Bilbao in Spain take second and third spots with speeds of 1.11 Gbps and 1.07 Gbps respectively. Germany’s Munich (1.03 Gbps) ranked fourth and Austria’s Vienna (921.1) in fifth. As a result, FWA is proven to be helping enterprise and service providers to be more agile and able to monetise investments in SDWAN overlay services.

MAXIMUM DOWNLOAD SPEEDS – OUTDOOR (Mbps)

1. Spain – 1114.00
2. Germany – 1035.00
3. Austria – 921.10
4. France – 803.96
5. Norway – 789.00

MAXIMUM DOWNLOAD SPEEDS – INDOOR (Mbps)

1. Norway – 1124.00
2. Spain – 1075.00
3. Germany – 929.10
4. France – 898.00
5. Great Britain – 602.00

“Europe is ready for fixed wireless access. Our test results show that 5G is beginning to mature into a justifiable investment that is ready to serve as an alternative to wired broadband and LEO’s in multiple countries throughout Europe. With performance rates that rival those of broadband and LEO, cellular should be considered when connecting enterprise locations. It’s a viable option,” said Toby Forman, CEO at SmartCIC. “It’s crucial to remember that these figures aren’t estimates or taken from a lab. They are real, on-the-ground 5G performance levels, straight from the field.”

Telemoval in Portugal continues to top the rankings with 545.38 Mbps average download speeds maintaining its download position since the CELLSMART Global Cellular Performance Survey in Q1 2023. It has a 131% greater average speed than 10th placed Orange FR NRNSA in Germany, showing how variable performance levels can be. Spain’s Webbing ranks second for download speeds with an average of 472.20 Mbps.

The test results show the leading average upload speeds are heavily saturated by Spain with Webbing, Finetworks and Orange France taking the top three spots with speeds of 113.25, 84.58 and 65.08 respectively.

TOP 5 CARRIERS – AVERAGE DOWNLOAD ALL NETWORKS (Mbps)

Telemovel Portugal 545.38
Webbing Spain 472.2
Orange FR NRNSA France 380.05
Telia Norway 52.086

“CELLSMART’s data is providing cellular intelligence that we use to advise our clients and help them to make informed decisions about local connectivity options across a global footprint. We’re helping our partners to capture the billion-dollar opportunity in fixed wireless access,” said Forman. “We will be launching hyper-local testing initiatives across Spain and France in the near future. The results from these tests will give service providers and enterprises granular insights into the availability of high-performance cellular networking. We’re driving the future of fixed wireless access.”

The latest test results in Europe collected data from 13,170 network speed tests conducted in 29 countries and 12,781 unique locations between 6th April 2023 and 14th April 2023. The survey provides a snapshot of actual performance across cellular technologies across the globe. CELLSMART uses the data it collects in its planning, network selection and service development and monitoring for fixed wireless enterprise customers.

CELLSMART Research Reveals Chile Leads Latin America in Mobile Performance

Cannes, France, 14 March 2023 – CELLSMART, the cellular intelligence division of SmartCIC, has released wireless performance data from Latin America that shows Chile is leading the region in both maximum download (371.7 Mbps) and upload (102.5 Mbps) speeds. Panama followed in second place with a 249.0 Mbps maximum upload speed, more than 120.0 Mpbs than the regional leader. Guatemala and Venezuela tied for second place in maximum upload speed with both delivering tests of 63.3 Mbps.

The CELLSMART Global Cellular Performance Survey shows Chile had the highest average download speeds across 3G, 4G and 5G networks with 72.4 Mbps. Uruguay (62.5 Mbps), Dominican Republic (40.4 Mbps), Brazil (39.0 Mbps) and El Salvador (32.1 Mbps) ranked in the Top 5 for average download speeds. Average upload speeds were led by Panama (25.5 Mbps) and followed by Peru (24.1), Chile (20.1), Brazil (17.0 Mbps) and Dominican Republic (16.5 Mbps) rounding out the Top 5.

MAXIMUM DOWNLOAD SPEEDS (Mbps)

1. Chile – 371.7
2. Panama – 249.0
3. Guatemala – 239.0
4. Dominican Republic – 186.5
5. Brazil – 172.9

MAXIMUM UPLOAD SPEEDS (Mbps)

1. Chile – 102.5
2. Guatemala – 63.3
3. Venezuela – 63.3
4. Dominican Republic – 61.0
5. Brazil – 56.1

“The survey shows that the 5G revolution in Latin America is only just starting. Cellular performance varies widely across markets and metro areas with Chile delivering the most consistent results of any LATAM country. There is a lot of room for growth and development of local cellular networks, especially when compared to the average upload and download speeds we’re seeing in North America and Western Europe,” said Toby Forman, CEO at SmartCIC. “Speed tests were largely conducted on 4G and 3G across the region and show that network quality, speed and latency will improve when 5G is deployed more widely.”

CELLSMART collected data from 9,950 network speed tests in the region between March 25 2022 and October 31 2022. The survey provides a snapshot of actual performance across cellular technologies across the globe. CELLSMART uses the data it collects in its planning, network selection and service development and monitoring for fixed wireless enterprise customers.

4G registered an average indoor download speed of 37.97 Mbps and an upload speed of 16.05 Mbps in Latin America. Outdoors, the download speed was noticeably lower at 27.47 Mbps, but stayed consistent in upload speed at 16.79 Mbps. 3G registered just 7.39 Mbps and 2.94 Mbps for indoor download and upload average speeds, and 8.94 Mbps and 8.62 Mbps for outdoor download and upload average speeds.

“Markets across Latin America are developing rapidly. The results show that 3G and 4G are still providing a reliable foundation for wireless connectivity across the region. 5G is growing and overtime we will see an increasing number of speed test that show the power of 5G locally in across markets in Latin America. In markets that are transforming quickly, it is critical that enterprises and service providers have access to accurate cellular performance data,” said Forman. “CELLSMART is constantly tracking and reporting accurate local intelligence enable service provider partners to capture the opportunity in fixed wireless.”
